Who is Van Hyundai? I do not know. But click here to see what their General Manager has to say about this web site and about me.

So here are the basic facts of the bait and switch pulled on me by Van Chevrolet.

Through our support of a church in England, my family has become friends with an English family that was planning on coming to America for a month-long visit in August 2006. They would spend a week with us and then a few weeks taking the great American Road Trip.

The Bait

Van Chevrolet Carrollton Texas Bait and Switch, Van Chevrolet, 1700 S Interstate 35E Carrollton, TX 75006, (972) 389-6700.

After discussing their travel plans we decided the best approach to their transportation needs was to buy a car when they arrived and sell it when they left.  They could drive to all the places they wanted to go, like San Antonio, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, etc. and then we would just sell it after they left. So we decided on a used Honda as they seem to hold their value and would offer the greatest opportunity to not lose too much value over the month we would own it.  I looked around and found Van Chevrolet's ad on cars.com.  Click here to view it.

The price was good.  And that should have tipped me off right away.  But it didn't and like a sheep to be led to slaughter, I called the dealership on the morning of Saturday July 29, 2006 and spoke to a gentleman by the name of Romero.

Romero assured me they still had the car and actually made an appointment with me to come see it.  As though it were some high end Maserati. But I fell for it. Made the appointment and went to see them.

I pull up on the lot and this young guy, whom I will call Eager, came to meet me. I told him that I was there to see Romero.  He takes me inside and sits me down in his cubicle and goes to get Romero, who cannot see me for one reason or another.

I explain that I am there to look at the 2001 Honda Civic EX that they had on the internet for $6,988. Eager asks to see my drivers license and fills out a sheet that has my particulars. As he is finishing up Romero joins us in the cubicle.  I suppose to supervise Eager.

Then the following exchange occurs:

Eager: That car is in ReCon right now because it has a problem with its mirror that we are fixing.

Me: Can I see it?

Eager: Yes.

Me: Now?

Eager: Sure, but we have that car on ebay right now and the bids on ebay are more than the price on cars.com.  But we have a Kia something or other than we can show you.

Me: [Angry] Is that car for sale or not?

Eager: Yes...

Me: [More Angry] What? [Looking at Romero] Why didn't you tell me that when I called you?

Romero: [Blank Stare] No response. Like a child caught in the act.

Eager: I can show you this Kia we have.

Me: [Enraged] I don't WANT the Kia, I came to see the Honda.

Then I got up and walked out without any further discourse. I know a bait and switch when I see one. There really was nothing else to discuss.

So they lie? So they advertise a product at a price they will not sell it at, so what?

My favorite line in the online advertising was this one: "Contact Chris McCrary to set up your VIP Appointment and save even more!" How is that possible? Anyone who contacted that guy would have to pay more, not save more!. Honestly.

Admittedly, there is not much I can do, but click here for my legal analysis.  They wasted an hour of my time as I had to drive out to Carrollton in Saturday afternoon traffic.  Then I spent another hour drafting this website. So I guess in the most technical sense, they have stolen two hours of my time.  And made me mad.  Which is very hard to do.

Maybe I can save someone else an hour- or two. Or maybe the world figures out the bait and switch technique used by Van Chevrolet and the place goes out of business.

Listen to others before you do business with them.

Their slogan is "Van Can."  All I know is Van can bait and switch. Nothing else from my vantage point.

Whatever.  I feel better. If anyone refuses to go there and buy a car, it will have been worth it.
